Happy Hump Day WLH Fam!! We have very much enjoyed going through the Psalms these past few weeks with you all, I believe that it is safe to say that we are officially halfway! We want you to be praying about what you want to dive into next with us, a topical study? Do you want us to get more personal with you and share more of our testimonies? Would you like us to do some co-writes when trying to answer hard questions? We WANT to hear from you!! There is no wrong answer here!
This past week, I have been digging into Psalm 77! Psalm 77 seems very applicable to all that has happened the last few months with COVID and the tornado here in Nashville. Overall the chapter has a pretty somber tone with an abrupt ending. One hopeful thing that we do see in this chapter is that it begins with prayer. Asaph’s cry in this chapter was a cry of distress, he pleaded for help, vocally.

In the second verse, we see that Asaph talks about the “day of my trouble”, I believe that these days were probably filled with prayer. When we face a spiritual battle, the first thing that we should do is pray. I know that for me it is not always my first instinct (that sounds horrible I know), my first instinct is to attempt to fix the situation without God. We see in this verse that Apaph is seeking for the Lord. That alone is such a powerful verse, we don’t see Asaph run to his friends to tell them about the trouble that he is having. We don’t see Asaph turn to things of the world in order to find comfort, we see him seek the Lord. God is our helper, our friend in a time of need, and our protector. He should be the first person that we call on when things don’t go our way!
Later on in the chapter (v13-20), we see that his plea changed from thinking of himself to worship. In my own personal walk, this is something that I have seen as I grow closer to Christ in my daily walk. My prayers were so selfish, I only called on God when I “really needed” Him or just to give God a laundry list of prayers that were honestly very shallow. Sometimes I still feel myself fall into that trap of a habit. Prayer is more than just coming to God with things that we want, but rather prayer is praising and worshipping Him for all that He does in our day to day lives. Praying to God is a gift that we have been given. When Christ paid our sin debt on the cross, He also tore the veil that withheld us from being able to have that personal relationship with Him. We can now have a relationship with God where we can pray at any time or place and really give all of our cares and anxieties to Him in our prayers!
