Psalm 100- A Psalm for giving grateful praise!

Hey y’all! I hope you had a good week and I am so glad you are here with me today. I really hope that you are enjoying the Summer of Psalms, I know I am! I love getting the chance to break down scripture, getting to research, get to know it a lot better, and even learn something new.

This week I’m breaking down Psalm 100 for you. I picked this one because I really liked that it is a Psalm for “giving grateful praise.” And when better to gratefully praise the Lord than on this beautiful Friday!

100:2- A Sam favorite

“Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.” I love this verse because I love music and singing, even though I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. But I love to worship the Lord through music, it’s one of my favorite parts of going to church and I love that it’s a way I can worship outside of church too.

100:2- How can we be joyful when we're sad?

Oof this is a loaded question, kind of difficult but very relevant. First we need to break down the idea of “joy”. Something I have learned throughout studying the bible is that joy doesn’t equal happiness. Happiness, like sadness, is an emotional state that usually depends on external circumstances. Whereas the biblical concept of joy is deeper. Joy is seen as confidence, hope, and trust that extends way further beyond our external circumstances. Happiness and sadness is usually short lived (I am SUPER happy when I eat a donut but when I’m done eating it, my happiness is over or I am sad when we don’t eat at my favorite restaurant but I’m not sad forever about it). Deep joy is different than that, deep joy comes from the Lord. This joy should be something we can express even in sadness.

100:3- How are God’s people like sheep?

If we look back to my post about Psalm 23 verse in 23:4 we discussed David’s use of comfort from a rod and a staff and I said,”We can relate this verse to us being the sheep and God being our shepherd, he protects us and guides us.” I think this is really echoed in this verse as well, that God’s people are like sheep and God is our shepherd. God protects us and guides us, just as a shepherd protects and guides his flock.

100:4- Where are God’s gates and courts?

So in this verse the terms gates and courts are used as places of meetings. We could interpret it as a place to meet God such as a church or temple. I don’t think that the use of gates and courts should be taken at face value but I see it more as a metaphor.

100:5- A Sam favorite

The first part of verse 5 says, “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever” and y’all I love it! I think it is such a beautiful verse that shows how good the Lord is and how much he truly loves us! I don’t know how it can get much better than that!
